Let's get something dead straight before we start.

I hate Keyword tools . I hate them more than you do, and I always have.

Really, I do. And if you give me a few seconds I will tell you why.

But first, let's start with how I got here, and why I'm writing this...

It must have been about three weeks ago now, I was browsing the web when I got an e-mail from a friend raving about this new piece of keyword software called "Keyword Elite", by Brad Callen.

Now, my friend is actually someone whose opinion I trust, which is the only reason I clicked on the link in the first place. And here I am...

"But why do I hate those damn keyword tools with a manic passion..."

Well, let me explain. I am an internet marketer, and I spend close to $400 a day on Google Adwords (giving me a return of about $2000 on average). In short, I know what I am doing (in fact, if you use Adwords, there is a good chance you already own my guide, but that's another story).

But, I have never been a big fan of keyword research tools - for me, having a keyword list 20,000 long has never conferred much of an advantage on the marketer. What it does do, though, is sound good on a sales letter... and lots of newbies see "build a list of 20,000 keywords", and think "wow! What a big number, here are my credit card details".

Then, the same guys who bought the keyword tool realize that a big list of keywords doesn't mean anything on its own - only after wasting their cash on Adwords... and then, the next tool comes out and the cycle repeats itself...

Great for the guys who made the software - pretty crappy for the poor newbie who bought it.

So, you can imagine my thoughts when I got my friend's e-mail recommending Keyword Elite. As I say, it was only because he was normally spot-on that I even clicked away.

When I reached the Keyword Elite website, I was actually pretty impressed with the sales copy, and even more impressed with some of the features that this appears to have - spy on your competitors on Adwords, nice suggestion features...

But, again, I have to be honest with you...,

Just so you know, I only purchased because... well, money isn't too much of an issue for me, and I was about to file it away on my to-do list when my friend started up again - in fact he pestered the hell out of me to get using the tool once I had it!

So, I decided to give him a chance, and make full use of Keyword Elite... so I sat down for an hour to play around with the software...

But an hour wasn't enough...

In the end, it took me two days to master the software - two full days to ignore the noise and focus on the signal, and really understand what works with Keyword Elite and what doesn't. Because, believe me this is a bit of a beast.

Just so you don't think I am exaggerating the scale of Keyword Elite, here are some of the featues of Keyword Elite. Remember, each one is practically a separate piece of software in itself:

1. Create a keyword List - enter a keyword or keyphrase and Keyword Elite will throw up as many related keywords as you want from half a dozen sources - in fact, this one project can throw up 10,000 keywords in one go. Deadly in the right hands, completely useless in the wrong ones.

2. Analyze Pay Per Click listings - enter one or more keywords, and KE will tell you how much your competitors are paying per click, how many ads are running, which ads are showing, how profitable the terms are, and various other factors... across five search engines (including Google and Yahoo of course). Exceptionally powerful for certain purposes (misleading for others)

3. Select a keyword list - KE also comes pre-loaded with tens of thousands of keyword lists; just enter one of your keyword terms, and watch KE pull up a pre-made, plug-in-and-profit list

4. Analyze Keyword Competition - a bonus project which quickly shows you how hard it is going to be to rank for a specific term in the search engines. Not exhaustive, but - if you get traffic from the search engines - very helpful.

5. Spy on Adwords Competition - KE also allows you to spy on your Adwords competitors; if one guy is running an ad, day in, day out... then they are making money from it. Sneaky little feature that makes sure you don't waste money on terms that have high turnover. But this one should be used selectively...

As you can see, KE is practically monstrous. In fact, each of the above features is practically a program in itself.

And, by the time I got my head around it, I needed a rest. But, I quickly focused in on the features that would work for me, and within a few days I started taking KE to my existing campaigns, and using it to generate new ones...
